Make your pitches relevant

One of the things I disliked most as an assignment editor during my 16-year news career was irrelevant pitches with no news value and that did not present a story or an angle that contributed to what could become one.
Give reporters and journalists something that aligns with what they’re producing and connect the dots in a way that is not self-serving but beneficial to their audience. (And be quick about it!) Do your homework.
